An optimistic attitude towards life is not only happier, but a new study suggests that an optimistic attitude may also prevent the risk of heart attack, stroke and premature death

Does mental health affect physical health? If there is a more positive and optimistic attitude towards life, it may indeed bring many positive biochemical benefits. Many doctors remind patients of the reasons for their positive treatment. The inner emotions and our views on life may also determine the length of life. The new study points out that optimistic people do live longer than those who are not optimistic, and the effect is more pronounced in older people.


The international science media "LiveScience" reported that Boston University School of Medicine has tracked the past 30 years for more than 69,000 female healthcare practitioners aged 58-86 and more than 1,400 veterans. Numerical changes have found that people who are most optimistic about life are 50 to 70% more likely to live above 85 than those who are least optimistic. Moreover, the most optimistic person among the subjects, on average, was 11% to 15% longer than the least optimistic.

The study found that the statistical results still showed the same trend after removing specific factors that may affect life spans, such as heart disease, cancer, and history of depression. The research team alleges that past studies have found that mental health has a lower risk to the body, including a lower risk of chronic diseases and a lower risk of early death. This is the first tracking study to directly analyze the relationship between optimism and length of life.

Optimism helps build a healthy habit and reduce extreme emotional reactions


Further analysis of the cross-match between optimism and lifestyle habits, the research team found that optimistic people are more likely to develop healthy behavioral habits, including smoking proportions, drinking, exercise, diet and so on. The authors point out that optimism may motivate them to prefer not to smoke, drink less, exercise more, eat a balanced diet, and increase their resistance to these desires. At the same time, optimistic people are more likely to survive the stress period in life, and under stress, show less extreme emotional reactions. In the past, studies have found that to enhance one's optimism, writing, meditation, and counseling can help.

Despite this, the study focused on whites with higher socioeconomic status and not included in other social attributes. Also, the study failed to consider external factors that affect a person's optimism, such as whether they were unemployed or not, whether they have experienced the deaths of relatives. Therefore, although the results of the study show that optimism is related to longevity, it does not mean that the two are inevitable causal relationships.
