Experience the ASUS "Second Times" notebook: Will the two screens become standard?

The 19" series of articles, first launched in the tiger sniffing young content public number "Difficult to escape" (ID: huxiu4youth). "The brain is big, making changes", we hope to present the creative insights contained in the young consumer goods, and It reflects the industrial and cultural phenomena.

At the functional level, the appearance of the laptop seems to have not been updated for a long time. It is always a screen, a keyboard, and a touchpad. No matter how stylish the appearance is, how the light of the belief light is cool, the entire product line of the notebook is like an old neighbor, familiar, but lacks surprise.

As a result, there have been many people discussing, like Surface and iPad Pro, which combines the advantages of tablet and PC and will completely replace the familiar notebook when its productivity tool attribute reaches a certain critical point.

In fact, the manufacturer is not "not thinking about progress". Earlier, the MacBook Pro added the TouchBar above the keyboard, trying to be an extended PC console, and ASUS tried the "dual-screen notebook" at the Taipei Computer Show in these two years. The concept, they are all exploring the next form of a notebook.

ASUS's newly released Lingyao X2 Pro draws on the layout of the ROG “Ice Blade” series and combines the unique ScreenPad technology. The biggest innovation is the addition of a 4K screen on the keyboard surface. Seam joints. Not long ago, ASUS held a new tasting in Beijing, and finally had the opportunity to touch the real machine, and it felt good.

On the same day, we also interviewed Chen Yuzhang, deputy general manager of ASUS computer personal computer products. This interview made us believe that the notebook market is not stagnant water. It seems to be a fixed form. In fact, it is testing the technical innovation and differentiated positioning of various manufacturers, whether it is For productivity tools, or for e-sports, notebooks in the future still have a lot of imagination.

Save an external monitor

Let me talk about the product itself. In fact, this is not the first time ASUS has made a fuss about increasing the display screen. At this time last year, Asustek used ScreenPad technology on the X Pro series, but at the time, the screen was placed directly on the touchpad, and the position of the display/touchpad itself was familiar. Below position.

ScreenPad 1.0 still appears in this year's ASUS product line, and the Lingyue X2 and Lingyao S3 products continue this layout.

ScreenPad 1.0 has been widely praised by users. Everyone is excited to use a mobile phone screen, but due to the size, no one regards this screen as a computer screen.

In fact, at the Taipei Computer Show last year, ASUS also launched a pure dual-screen notebook "PROJECT PRECOG". Although there are not many people who know that there is no mass production, it has already demonstrated the attitude of ASUS: the dual-screen notebook is the future trend. And the size of this screen should be as large and comfortable as possible.

Chen Yuzhang said that the X Pro product line mainly considers the productivity needs of the designer population in research and development. They will find that basically, all designers will have one or even more displays when they are in a condition, and designers also hope to have better split-screen work experience in the mobile office.

After a variety of explorations last year, some of the technologies of the Lingyao series continued to improve, and it became possible to have a larger screen on the C side (keyboard side), so there was ScreenPad Plus, and they also retained the keyboard and touch. The board, without sacrificing the user experience, adds extra features.

“We think that such a product can already meet the user experience, so we bring such a product to market.”

The main screen of Lingyao X2 Pro is a 15.6-inch OLED touch screen with a resolution of 3840×2160, a narrow border screen accounting for 88%, a color gamut covering 93% DCI-P3 color gamut, and a secondary screen with a 14-inch LCD. Touch screen, resolution 3840×1100 (32:9), matte processing makes the hand feel better, also prevents reflection, supports a special stylus, two screens, and other widths can be seamlessly integrated.

In the keyboard layout, a similar ROG "ice blade" series scheme is adopted, and the keyboard is compressed at the bottom. The right side of the keyboard is a two-in-one touchpad and number pad, which can meet the requirements of touch and digital input at the same time. The feel of the keyboard input in this layout is a matter of opinion. On the basis of adding a wrist rest accessory, it is actually quite smooth.

Take a step back and sacrifice a little bit of input experience, in exchange for more than one display screen, no matter how bad this wave.

Taking care of the designer's requirements for computer performance, Lingyao X2 Pro also equipped with Intel's new Core i9 processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card, plus 32GB of memory and 1TB PCIex4 solid state drive, can be said to be currently in the ASUS thin and light camp The top flagship.

If you want to say that it is not enough, it is to take care of the endurance and performance requirements, the fuselage is still thick, the weight is not really light if you carry it, you still need some physical strength. The product is expected to be listed at the end of August, and the price has not been announced yet.

Professionalism and integration

Because of the appearance, we are very skeptical that this X2 Pro is directly based on the design of the ROG "Ice Blade" series. And the boundaries between the game and the business have been blurred for a long time. Does the Lingyao X2 Pro consider the needs of some e-sports players?

In this regard, Chen Yuzhang first clarified the difference in design ideas between the two products for us:

"The early idea of the Ice Blade series was to dissipate heat. Its cooling module is placed on the top of the keyboard, so the user will not touch the part of the heat source when using the user, but the design inspiration of this notebook is quite different. Initially, we were inspired by ScreenPad to enlarge the screen to extend a window to two screens, allowing it to increase the viewable area by 50%, so the second screen we want to be as close as possible to the main screen. In this way, when consumers look at the two screens, they can get more content at a glance, so its design structure is not the same as the ice blade series. The ice blade series is for heat dissipation, while the Lingyao X2 Pro is Designed from the user experience."

He said that between the core needs of PC users, both productivity and games, there are general performance requirements and different product development trends.

For example, their requirements for processors and graphics cards are similar. No matter which side, high-end processors, fast solid-state drives, and rich interfaces are required.

But they are also different. For example, on the screen, e-sports may need more screen refresh rate, response speed, etc., but the designer may need more color saturation and color accuracy.

Therefore, Chen Yuzhang believes that at the beginning of the birth of notebook products, it is necessary to find out whom the users are facing, and they will definitely have different levels of demand.

In terms of Lingyao X2 Pro, it is a general-purpose notebook that is suitable for both players and designers. For example, hardware configurations such as processors and graphics cards are all e-sports. At the same time, the interface of the product is well designed. The three interfaces of lightning can be used to connect two screens with lightning and three HDMI, so it is equivalent to two 4K screens inside and two external 4K screens.

But this is still a notebook for designers. Chen Yuzhang mentioned a detail. In the product development process, the most difficult problem to solve is: the hardware part refers to how to put the second screen into the existing size, to ensure that the size does not increase too much while ensuring its position is the best viewing position?

After doing a lot of research, they decided to adopt the "narrow border" scheme that everyone can see now and developed software for switching between the two screens to ensure that the window is flexible and orderly between the two screens. Designers provide a better experience.

Of course, Asus has not said anything about death. Although now, ScreenPad Plus technology will only be a product for high-end designers. But the official disclosure has also been planned to be more intimate and to target more diversified products. In the future, this technology should be applied to different product lines just like ScreenPad 1.0.

From the concept of this product, we can already find that although the future notebook is still the magic stick that "I can do everything when I buy one," I have already walked on the path of "one special and much energy". Performance is still important, but the optimization of details in different directions will ultimately determine the success or failure of their market positioning.

In the future, we should be able to see notebooks that have different styles, or that meets professionalism or interest. Products become more subdivided and choices are more, and for consumers, it is a good thing.
