When I join the company, my colleagues do PPT every day: What is the point of work?
In the previous article, "The bosses who want 996, I am
afraid that you are the collective fishermen of the whole company", we
have asked everyone to share the "experience". In the background of
the shell, the phrase that appears frequently is "work does not make
sense." Many people have loved their work, but after working for a while,
they were disappointed, slacked, tired, and forced into a "salted
fish" by work.
It’s no surprise that the accident is based on Gallup’s
Global Ideal Work Report released last year. He has “ideal work” (doing what he
wants to do, having a sense of mission, high commitment, and enthusiasm for
work) in China. Only 2%, ranked 15th among Asian countries, lower than the
Asian average.
It can be said that it is not surprising that it is a bit
strange to pursue "meaning" in the current situation of using
entertainment to dispel everything.
We chose five friends from the message - there is a game
development plan that makes the character change from paper to paper. Some
white-collar workers write product manuals at the communication giant seven
nights, and there is a waste of life in the Internet big factory. The
"factory sister" who resigned and resigned, as well as the water
conservancy engineer of the state-owned enterprise and the project management
manager of China-Myanmar trade, talked about why the work made them so painful.
Work is a waste of life
In April of this year, Li Ge resigned from a 996 Internet
company.
"I can't stand it on the first day of the job," Li
Ge told the shell. "Our project is very immature. When I went on that day,
it was a mess. I want nothing, I have to work, but I Whom to connect with, whom
to take the materials, and who knows no one."
Li Ge’s project is similar to a content distribution platform.
Since the vice president of the project is very advocating overtime culture, Li
Ge has to stay in the company for 12 hours a day.
She described her daily work in the former club for a whole
day: at 9:00 in the morning, she began to fish, and she went to eat at 11:30,
and started working at 1:30 in the afternoon until 9:00. Not because there is
too much work to work overtime, but because, at 9 p.m., the director will come
to the station to see if people are gone.
Li Ge said that she does not reject overtime, but does not
mean overtime. "Do content recommendation or manual recommendation, an
Internet company does not even have an algorithm. The leadership does not
understand the business and recruits a group of fresh-selling students to
pretend to work overtime all day. This group of people can't do anything."
The serious business is not good, the management process is
long and annoying. The company where Li Ge is located, no matter how small the
plan is, PPT is a must, and it is still very beautiful. Li Ge recalled that
some colleagues are doing PPT every day, and she has been removed from her job.
There are also weekly meetings that have made countless
office workers scratch their heads. It turned out that on Friday, fortunately,
Li Ge changed to Monday after he joined the company. "From 7:00 pm to
10:00, each group takes turns to talk about the weekly newspaper, and then the
other groups ask questions again, and there is nothing to talk about. Each
group seems to have done a lot of things to behave like a bunch of things. No,
it is a waste of time."
Every day I thought about staying in the company for 12
hours, but I couldn’t do anything. Li Ge felt that there was a grievance in her
stomach and slowly invaded her whole body so that when she sat down at the
station, she would have tears. Impulse.
Only three months, Li Ge chose to leave.
Work is both fulfilling and boring
Liu Lili, who has graduated for two years, works in a
communications factory. Her work is very saturated, and she can't do anything.
Lili's job is to write instructions for new products. The
texts and pictures in the brochures that are included in the purchase of
electronic products, the materials in the showcases, the pages, etc. are all
within the scope of Lili's work. There is also a product description manual for
the channel side, which explains the details of the technical upgrade, and is
also responsible for the department where Lili is located.
Lili's position requires both an understanding of the
hardware technology of the product and a certain level of writing skills. It
seems that the result of both sides is that neither side is fine. I don't know
enough about the complicated technical details. I was accused by the
predecessors that I was not professional enough, and the results I made were
not recognized, which made her frustrated.
Lili doesn't know how much she needs to know about
technology to complete her work tasks. Many things need her to figure out a
little. As for the product descriptions written, Lili often asks herself, “How
many people are watching this thing I wrote, are these important?”
Not to mention the long working hours. Normal is 8 nights 9
and the commuting time is 7 nights, which means that only one or two hours
before bedtime is her own time.
However, Lili feels that compared with other students who
are often staying up late on the Internet, their 996 is still
"regular." The law made her think of the years of high school: every
day on time, class/class, there is endless roles/work.
Lili did not understand that her family was fairly affluent
and why she was suffering from her work. Working hard with my parents, the
answer is nothing more than "Which work is not hard? My father told her
that the economy is not good now and the employment situation is not good.
Don't rush to resign. My friend also said that you are already very good. Why
do you still have to think about something that you have not done?
Lili's work is, in the eyes of most people, a good job at
first class. Good work and ideal work, it seems that you can't draw the equal
sign.
Lili often thinks that if it is a meaningful job that he
likes, "only half of the current income is acceptable."
Craving for meaning
Adam Smith, the father of economics, believes that people
are born to be lazy, always living as comfortably as possible, and only working
for remuneration.
In our conversation about work, the meaning of
"meaning" is much higher than "salary", and "work is
just for the money" is also used as self-deprecating rhetoric. Maybe we
are not driven by money, as Smith said.
Why do people so eager for the "meaning sense"? In
the eyes of many scholars, this may be innate. American psychologist Roy
Baumeister believes: "The difference between humans and other animals lies
in their pursuit of meaning."
The anthropologist Ernest Becker tried to explain the human
the desire for meaning with the theory of "anxiety buffer".
He pointed out that human beings know the inevitability of
death and fear death, realizing that they are no more valuable than a tree or a
grass in nature.
To alleviate these fears and anxieties, human beings use
their highly developed cognitive abilities to give meaning to everything that
exists in reality - supernatural and symbolic beyond death.
As Marx Weber said, “People are animals hanging on the net
of the meaning of their weaving.” People use the tool of “meaning” to gain
self-esteem and feel that they are an important part of the world than pure
The natural matter is more valuable.
Therefore, when people lose their sense of meaning, they
will be at a loss.
The collision between ideal and reality
Many people have been ambitions when they first entered the
workplace and “unauthorized” give work a magnificent or colorful meaning.
However, after working for a few years, I found that the work in the real work
imagination is far away, and most of my ambitions cannot be realized.
Some people are overwhelmed by the sense of loss of meaning,
convincing themselves that they no longer expect to work.
Mr. Jin has been engaged in the construction and management
of water conservancy projects in a state-owned enterprise for five years.
State-owned enterprises have very regular working hours, every Friday, every
day from 8:00-17:30. Visit the project site once a week or two, and notify the
operation and maintenance team to deal with the problem;
On duty, in addition to reviewing the water data every hour,
it is basically in a state of nothing to do and is forced to fish in the
hardest-hit areas; there are also some fragmentary tasks such as processing
documents, attending meetings, receiving leadership to check and so on.
Mr. Jin said that he had been very passionate about his work
when he graduated. He spent two and a half years on the Hulunbuir Prairie. He
participated in the construction process of a water conservancy project from
scratch. The county where the project is located is very backward and the
conditions are very difficult. Mr. Jin feels that he can participate in this
project. It is his luck. “You can see the change every day. It seems that you
have planted a tree and grow into a big tree from a small sapling.”
However, such opportunities are few and far between.
Gradually, Mr. Jin found that there is no room for creativity in his work, and
he is occupied by trivial tasks daily. "The sense of accomplishment is now
getting weaker and thinner. After all, personal influence is limited. To be
honest, I am not working now.
However, Mr. Jin said that he will still work diligently to
do his job well and that the work he has to take out must be worthy of himself.
"It just has nothing to do with my love."
Some people are still struggling.
Li Lei, born in 1992, is working on overseas project
management and travels back and forth between China and Myanmar. For Li Lei,
who is a sociologist, the strange cultural environment is too tempting.
The repeatability of
the application materials with the government departments is very high, but
every time the boss asks him to do it again, Li Lei feels that this repetitive
work is completely unnecessary. The boss will also temporarily arrange some extra
work, such as letting him translate the English literature. This kind of thing
that has nothing to do with his work will make him think of resignation.
What bothers him more is the conflict between his values and
the company. The background of sociology made Li Lei first observe the local
religion, culture and social structure when entering the local area of Myanmar.
However, the reason for his work made him have to look at it from an economic
point of view, with a stronger utilitarian mentality... This is inconsistent
with his original intention to choose this job, which often makes him feel
contradictory.
Is work always painful?
Unsaturated work is a waste of life, work is saturated and
boring, and the ideal work is only seen as the ideal burst.
"Work is just making a living, it has nothing to do
with love." "Which work is not hard?" - It seems that we have
defaulted, and work is never a pleasure.
But anthropologists do not agree with this view. Some
economic anthropologists believe that the pain of modern people's work stems
from the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago, and the period since the
the agricultural revolution has only accounted for a small part of human history.
According to American anthropologist Marshall Sahlins, the
hunter-gatherers before the agricultural revolution were much happier than
us. They only need to work 3-5 hours a day, occasionally take a hunt to fill
their stomachs, and pick up the fruits for the rest of the time to talk about
love, so leisurely.
But after the agricultural revolution, people's labor time
has prolonged and hardened, the diet has become more and more single, and the
body has become shorter and shorter. However, the peasants are still able to
see the fruits of their labor and feel the value of their labor.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the arrival of
the industrial revolution reinforces the sense of meaninglessness of work—the
peasants who once worked in the fields came to the city and became the
operators and defenders of the machine.
For example, the workers in the bakery, they are on the
bread production line all the time, only responsible for one of the steps, and
can not see the joy of the guests after buying the bread.
In these monotonous and repetitive tasks, humanity is
erased, people are alienated into parts on the machine, the final effect of
work is not seen, and the meaning of work and its value are less likely to be
felt.
In the information age, the meaninglessness and
valuelessness of work have not been reduced or disappeared. Instead, it is very
common among white-collar workers, office workers or so-called "knowledge
workers."
In the view of sociologists, the rise of the "knowledge
industry" has only changed the medium of boring work from heavy machinery
to digital technology - people have changed from workers on the assembly line
to dealing with "boring documents", ppt, excel, Regular meeting,
office workers at the weekly meeting.
The essence is still the part.
Therefore, only two of the 100 people can find the ideal
job, and it is not difficult to understand.
Lucky minority
Our last interviewee was a “lucky minority” – the closest to
the Gallup survey of 2% of people with “ideal jobs”.
F sauce likes games, and her current and last job is in the
game company. The game's gameplay, functions, operating procedures, including
the game's character settings, plots, dialogues, etc. are all responsible for
her text.
F Say said that he likes games. She described her day of the
workday: wake up in the morning, open her eyes and swim, eat breakfast, go to
the station to hold a mobile game, then look at the industry information, have
a job, do not live to brush. Sleeping at night and closing her eyes, her life
all around the game. She has little way to separate her life from her work.
The quality of domestic mobile games is worrying, the
industry's high tolerance for plagiarism and excessive dependence on sheet
metal players make F sauce unhappy. However, she can accept the gap between
imagination and reality, "At least I can enjoy this process even if I
can't make a satisfactory work."
Moreover, she feels that the game she made is bad, and it is
also her work, just like her child. F Sauce once saw other people playing games
developed by themselves on the subway, "cool for a few days."
F sauce company is a typical Internet 996 model, but she
feels that going to work is also doing what she likes, not hard work, "I
feel like I am not at work when I go to work, right?"
She also feels that there is no need for 996, because there
is not so much work to do, except for the last stage before the new game goes
online, it is necessary to work overtime, usually three or four hours of life,
and other times are crazy to fish. "But the leadership feels that it
should be 996. The whole industry is like this, so we have to do the same. And
we have to punch in and out of work. There is no one left at 9:30. No way, we
must have 12 hours at the station.".
F Sauce does not regret the choice of this industry and did
not think about changing careers when considering future career planning. To
achieve this ideal, it is like drawing a card you want most in a game."
Li Ge who resigned also has what he wants to do. She wants
to make good, valuable content, not sensational boring spam. She hopes that she
can go to work happily. It can be a little bit."
What kind of talent is the person who will shine?
Just a week before this article was published, Li Ge told us
that she had found a new job. We asked her if this is the job you want? She is
still very confused, "but at least this is a job that can get off work on
time and with a high probability."
